Wuhan University is a centrally administered, comprehensive key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, designated as a priority construction institution under the '985 Project' and '211 Project,' and one of the first batch of 'Double First-Class' universities. Its origins trace back to the Ziqiang School established in 1893, officially renamed National Wuhan University in 1928. In 2000, a new Wuhan University was formed through the merger of the original Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Power, Wuhan Institute of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University. As a nationally renowned and high-level research university, Wuhan University possesses strong academic capabilities and social influence in fields such as humanities and social sciences, geospatial science, remote sensing information, law, medicine, and fundamental sciences.

Research background

In the context of continuous urbanization, residents' household consumption patterns, lifestyles, energy usage, and travel behaviors are profoundly influencing the structure of urban carbon emissions. Household-level consumption and lifestyle characteristics serve as fundamental foundations for understanding variations in household carbon emissions and provide critical entry points for analyzing emission reduction mechanisms and optimizing low-carbon policies. Accordingly, Wuhan University has initiated academic research on 'Household Carbon Emissions in the Context of Urbanization: Characteristics, Mechanisms, Simulation, and Reduction Pathways,' aiming to systematically investigate the consumption and lifestyle behaviors of Guangzhou residents through comprehensive household surveys. This effort will provide essential data to support subsequent analysis of household carbon emission characteristics, mechanism identification, and reduction pathway exploration.

Research scope

In April 2026, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Wuhan University to conduct an academic study on 'Household Carbon Emissions in the Context of Urbanization: Characteristics, Mechanisms, Simulation, and Reduction Pathways.' The study focuses on resident households across the 11 districts of Guangzhou, employing an online questionnaire approach with a target of collecting 1,200 valid samples. Integrated with the execution plan and formal survey instrument, the research primarily covers household basic characteristics, household economic and consumption expenditure structures, lifestyle patterns, energy use and durable goods ownership, housing and transportation features, online and offline consumption behaviors, frequency of dining out and food delivery, as well as time-use patterns of household members during working and non-working days, providing comprehensive behavioral data on household consumption and carbon emissions-related behaviors to support subsequent analysis of household carbon emission characteristics, mechanism identification, simulation, and reduction pathway research.

Expected outcomes

This study is expected to generate a standardized, comprehensive database reflecting the consumption and lifestyle behaviors of Guangzhou's resident households. The data will provide reliable foundations for household consumption carbon emission estimation, mechanism analysis, and related policy evaluation. Additionally, the research will enhance the understanding of the relationship between household consumption activities and low-carbon development, offering solid empirical support for future academic research, model development, and exploration of household emission reduction pathways.
