Research background
As urban aging continues to intensify, the interrelationships among elderly residents' living environments, daily activities, psychological states, and physical health have attracted growing attention. Shenzhen University of Technology intends to conduct a real-life residential setting questionnaire survey and environmental behavior data collection project focused on the elderly population in Shenzhen. The study aims to better understand the connections between socioeconomic characteristics, cognitive status, emotional well-being, subjective life satisfaction, physical health indicators, and environmental and physical activity patterns among older adults. This project involves multiple stages, including elderly participant recruitment, home-based interviews, environmental data collection, and the use of wearable devices for monitoring and data recovery—all of which require rigorous communication protocols, on-site operational standards, and high data quality controls.
Research scope
In April 2026, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Shenzhen University of Technology to conduct a residential questionnaire survey and environmental behavior data collection project targeting elderly residents in Shenzhen. The study focuses on individuals aged 60 and over across diverse residential types, including shanty towns and commercial residential communities, while also meeting age and gender representation requirements in the sample design. Participants will be recruited through referrals by young family members, recommendations from community committees, and on-the-spot intercepts at street-level locations. The survey will collect data on respondents' basic demographics, living conditions, educational background, co-resident status, pre-retirement occupations, housing size, mental health status, daily cognitive function, social engagement, sleep patterns, emotional states, and overall life satisfaction. Concurrently, data will be gathered from wearable device usage records, photographs of living environments, video footage, and environmental behavior logs to form a comprehensive, traceable research dataset that supports the analysis of the relationships between living environments, physical activity patterns, and the psychological and physiological well-being of older adults.
Expected outcomes
Through this research, Shenzhen University of Technology will gain a more comprehensive understanding of the psychological states, health conditions, daily routines, and environmental behavior patterns of elderly residents across different living environments. The project will produce a comprehensive database comprising questionnaire data, individual sample records, environmental documentation, wearable device monitoring data, and a completed sample list. The findings will help identify key factors influencing elderly individuals' cognitive function, emotional well-being, life satisfaction, and overall health levels, providing reliable and complete data support for future research in elderly health, aging-friendly living environment design, community health promotion, and related analytical studies.
