A Study on Language Usage Habits among Chengdu Residents

Company overview

This project was commissioned by a language and cultural research institute specializing in academic research on Chinese dialects, linguistic evolution, and regional cultural heritage. The institute has long collaborated with universities, research institutions, and local governments, conducting systematic analyses of urban language ecosystems through quantitative surveys and field investigations, while also promoting the preservation and dissemination of local culture. The institute has previously conducted studies on dialect change and language usage behaviors in multiple Chinese cities, possessing strong theoretical foundations and practical experience.

Research background

Language serves as a key carrier of culture, while dialects embody more distinct regional characteristics and folk traditions. With the acceleration of urbanization, increased population mobility, and the growing trend of standardized media discourse, the frequency and contexts of dialect use are undergoing significant changes. Chengdu dialect, particularly Sichuanese, one of the most widely spoken regional dialects in China, not only reflects the unique charm of Ba-Shu culture but also functions as a key identifier of Chengdu residents' identity and sense of belonging. In the rapidly evolving social linguistic environment, understanding the language usage habits of Chengdu residents across different life scenarios—such as daily life, work, education, and leisure—is essential for analyzing the underlying social psychology and cultural motivations behind language choices, holding significant social and academic value.

Research scope

In October 2014, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by a research institute to conduct a specialized survey on the language usage habits of Chengdu residents. The study employed a combination of questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews, sampling residents across different genders, age groups, occupations, and educational backgrounds. It collected data on language choices and usage frequency in various daily contexts, including family communication, public services, educational environments, workplace interactions, and recreational activities. The research focused on analyzing residents' switching behaviors between Mandarin and Sichuanese, their contextual sensitivity in language use, and emotional attachment to language, while also exploring key internal factors influencing language variation—such as intergenerational differences, social identity, educational background, and urban belonging.

Expected outcomes

This study is expected to systematically map the language usage patterns of Chengdu residents across diverse life contexts, revealing the relationship between dialect use and social structures and cultural identity, and identifying the primary drivers behind changes in language use. The final report will provide comprehensive data support for language and cultural research institutions, further advancing scientific decision-making and research in areas such as language planning, local cultural preservation, and public communication strategies. It will also serve as a reference for local governments in formulating bilingual services and cultural integration policies.
