Differentiation Validation Study of STABILO Pencil Products

Company overview

Schwan-STABILO, established in 1855 and headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany, is a multinational enterprise with over 150 years of history. The company's core business includes writing instruments, makeup pens, and outdoor sports products, and it is a globally recognized brand in stationery and lifestyle goods. Schwan-STABILO consistently emphasizes product innovation and design, enjoying high acclaim worldwide.

Research background

To protect its original designs, Schwan-STABILO filed an industrial design patent for its writing instrument product EASY GRAPH SLIM in 2017. However, during subsequent patent enforcement proceedings, the company received a Notice of Acceptance of Request for Invalidity Declaration, requiring a timely response to defend the uniqueness of the patent. In order to substantiate that the EASY GRAPH SLIM design exhibits significant differentiation in the market, Schwan-STABILO urgently needed consumer-based, objective evaluations to provide evidence supporting the validity of its patent.

Research scope

In July 2019, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Schwan-STABILO to conduct a market research study on the visual design of the EASY GRAPH SLIM product. The study adopted an open and impartial approach, inviting consumers from diverse backgrounds to participate. Participants were asked to compare and evaluate the visual characteristics of multiple pencil products, including EASY GRAPH SLIM, and provide their perceptions and cognitive assessments of design differences. The collected data, combining subjective user judgments with detailed visual analysis, will serve as supporting evidence for the distinctiveness and recognizability of the design within the category of functionally similar products.

Expected outcomes

The final report will provide Schwan-STABILO with scientifically rigorous and impartial consumer perception data to support its legal claim that the EASY GRAPH SLIM product's visual design demonstrates clear differentiation. This research outcome will not only strengthen the company's position in patent enforcement proceedings but also enhance public awareness and market influence regarding the brand's commitment to original design innovation.
