Research on Consumers of Diamond Ring Purchases

Company overview

Blue Nile is a leading global online retailer of diamond jewelry, founded in 1999 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, USA. Through its high-quality diamonds, transparent pricing, and convenient online shopping experience, Blue Nile has quickly established a strong position in the jewelry industry and has become one of the preferred platforms for consumers purchasing diamond jewelry worldwide. In 2013, Blue Nile announced a sole partnership with China's leading fashion e-commerce platform, ZouXiu Network, launching the Blue Nile ZouXiu flagship store in China, marking its official entry into the Chinese market

Research background

As the online jewelry market matures and competition intensifies, Blue Nile recognizes that relying solely on online channels is no longer sufficient to meet Chinese consumers' high expectations for brand trust and service experience. Therefore, the company plans to expand its offline retail presence to strengthen its local market influence in China and enhance customer confidence in product quality and service. At the same time, the preferences, aesthetics, and purchasing behaviors of China's younger generation of consumers toward diamond rings are undergoing significant changes, and accurately understanding this target demographic has become a key factor in shaping the brand's strategic direction

Research scope

In December 2019, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Blue Nile and its marketing strategy partner Alarice International to conduct an in-depth study on consumer behavior in the Chinese market for diamond ring purchases. This research employed a mixed-method approach combining quantitative survey questionnaires and qualitative focus group interviews, targeting core consumer groups aged 25 to 35 in major Chinese cities. The study focused on analyzing the motivations behind diamond ring purchases, preferred touchpoints, choices between online and offline purchasing paths, and overall service experiences. It also explored pain points and unmet needs encountered during the purchasing journey, providing solid evidence to support the brand's next-phase strategic planning

Expected outcomes

This research is expected to provide Blue Nile with first-hand data on the Chinese diamond ring market, enabling the brand to accurately understand the characteristics and behavioral patterns of its core consumer base. The findings will inform product design strategies, enhance the relevance and effectiveness of marketing communications, and support the development of standardized operational procedures for offline stores in areas such as service processes, employee training, and customer experience—ultimately elevating the brand's competitiveness and customer satisfaction in the Chinese market
