The Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) at The University of Hong Kong belongs to the Faculty of Architecture and is based on the Urban Research and Urban Planning Centre (CUSUP), its research arm. DUPAD is dedicated to teaching and research in areas such as urban sustainability, urban policy, and spatial governance. The department focuses on comprehensive research into issues in high-density cities, with particular attention to development models in China, Hong Kong, and the Belt and Road Initiative regions. It is one of the internationally recognized academic institutions in urban planning.

Research background

In the context of accelerating urbanization and increasing transportation pressures, understanding residents' travel behaviors and their environmental perceptions has become a key direction in urban planning and transportation policy research. The Department of Urban Planning and Design at The University of Hong Kong aims to gain deeper insights into residents' travel patterns to provide a theoretical foundation and data support for developing greener, more efficient alternative transportation systems. As such, in September 2021, the department commissioned CEIDEA Research to conduct a large-scale quantitative questionnaire survey in Chengdu, exploring the intrinsic relationship between residents' travel choices and their environmental perceptions.

Research scope

This study targets Chengdu's permanent residents as its primary survey population. CEIDEA Research employed a combination of offline intercept surveys and online questionnaires to reach diverse groups across different age groups, occupations, and travel modes. The questionnaire focuses on residents' subjective perceptions of transportation environments, their daily travel mode choices, preferences for transportation modes, commuting time and route selection, and further delves into the motivations and acceptance levels behind alternative or supplementary travel behaviors (such as cycling, walking, and public transit), constructing a comprehensive data model linking residents' travel behavior and environmental perception.

Expected outcomes

Through this survey, the Department of Urban Planning and Design at The University of Hong Kong will obtain first-hand data on the interactive relationship between travel behavior and environmental perception among Chengdu residents, providing significant support for future academic research. The findings will serve as reference for optimizing urban transportation systems, designing public spaces, promoting low-carbon travel, and formulating urban policies. Additionally, the research will advance interdisciplinary studies in the transportation field and enhance the department's international academic influence in urban sustainability research.
