The Ho Ying-chun Institute (referred to as 'the Institute') was established in 2007 as a collaborative research and development platform jointly founded by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Ho Ying-chun Foundation. Research background

The traffic environment in central urban aging residential neighborhoods in Guangzhou has long suffered from limited travel options, outdated facilities, parking shortages, and inefficient allocation of road resources. In the context of the growing popularity of shared transportation, the demand for upgrading traffic systems in these neighborhoods has become increasingly urgent. To improve urban livability and traffic efficiency, the Institute plans to conduct a data-driven, systematic study on the travel needs and shared transportation compatibility of residents in central urban aging residential areas, aiming to identify practical and scalable pathways for traffic environment renewal.

Research scope

In 2023, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the Ho Ying-chun Institute to conduct a specialized investigation on the upgrading of traffic environments in Guangzhou's aging residential neighborhoods. The study focuses on urban residents living in residential complexes built prior to the year 2000. Using a non-home-based questionnaire approach, a stratified random sample of 600 individuals was selected. The research examines a range of factors including the construction year of the residential complex, property management and parking conditions, frequency and usage scenarios of shared transportation, residents' awareness and preferences regarding shared transportation solutions for residential areas, as well as the basic socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents. The study aims to extract key bottlenecks and latent needs in traffic upgrades for aging neighborhoods through empirical data, providing a systematic basis for analysis.

Expected outcomes

This research aims to provide empirical support and precise decision-making references for the upgrading of traffic environments in aging residential areas. It is expected to comprehensively understand the travel behaviors and key traffic pain points of residents in central urban aging neighborhoods, identify differences in travel demand across different price segments, construction eras, and regional types of aging residential areas; through stratified sampling analysis, it will extract residents' levels of acceptance and preferred options for shared transportation-based neighborhood solutions, providing scientific support for future policy formulation. The research findings will assist government departments in implementing differentiated, actionable traffic environment improvement strategies during urban renewal, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of the city's transportation system and resident satisfaction.
