Research background

With the continuous expansion of Guangzhou's urban rail transit network, the construction and planning of new metro lines have sparked growing interest in changes in residents' travel patterns and transportation behaviors. Particularly amid increasing urban congestion and environmental pressures, the question of whether the expansion of public transportation systems can reduce residents' dependence on private vehicles has become a key concern for both academic circles and government authorities. The research team led by Dr. He Ying from the Department of Geography and Resource Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong aims to conduct on-the-ground field research to systematically assess the potential impacts of the planned Guangzhou Metro Line 11 on residents' public transportation usage behavior and their intentions to purchase private vehicles, providing data support for future transportation development strategies.

Research scope

In July 2013, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the Department of Geography and Resource Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong to conduct a survey among residents along the planned route of Guangzhou Metro Line 11. The survey employed a combination of home visits, fixed-point interviews, and street intercepts, covering key aspects such as residents' travel frequency, mode of transportation, commuting time, expectations regarding the impact of newly opened metro stations, and future intentions to purchase a private vehicle. The sample included residents from various communities and across different age groups and occupational backgrounds to ensure the breadth and representativeness of the data. The project was led by Dr. He Ying and received funding support from The University of Hong Kong's Special Research Fund, aiming to provide empirical data for subsequent transportation behavior modeling and policy simulation.

Expected outcomes

This study is expected to provide detailed data for modeling the relationship between metro construction and changes in residents' transportation behaviors, supporting the project team's scientific analysis of the scope and intensity of the impact of rail transit development. The research findings will help understand the suppressive effect of metro networks on private vehicle dependency, evaluate the effectiveness of public transportation systems in optimizing urban traffic, and provide important reference for Guangzhou and other major cities to formulate more rational traffic management policies, promote green transportation, and advance sustainable urban development.
