Research background

3D printing has emerged as a major technological transformation in the manufacturing sector, widely applied across industries such as mold manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and construction. At the national level, the release of the 'National Plan for the Promotion of Additive Manufacturing (2014–2020)' has provided policy guidance and strategic direction for the industry's development. Under this context, as a major manufacturing province, Guangdong has seen a growing demand for 3D printing-related enterprises and industrial applications, particularly for professionals with skills in 3D modeling, equipment operation, and post-processing. Guangzhou Vocational and Technical School aims to conduct a scientific investigation to accurately grasp market and enterprise talent demands, optimize its course offerings and teaching reforms, and promote the integration of 3D printing programs with regional industrial development

Research scope

In October 2015, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Guangzhou Vocational and Technical School to conduct a market and educational study on 3D printing technologies across Guangdong Province. The research focused on: the current development status of 3D printing and related application industries within Guangdong, the technical pathways and staffing standards of leading enterprises, the competency requirements for skilled talent as perceived by enterprises, the specialized programs and achievements of similar vocational schools in the 3D printing field, and the employment distribution and development trajectories of students. The study employed a combination of questionnaires, expert interviews, and on-site enterprise visits to comprehensively collect frontline enterprise feedback and educational best practices, providing a solid basis for optimizing the school's curriculum and reforming talent cultivation strategies

Expected outcomes

This research will clearly map the market demand structure for 3D printing talent, identify core requirements of enterprises regarding graduate competencies and job fit, and highlight successful practices and weaknesses in professional development among similar institutions. The final report will propose practical recommendations for course design, training platform development, and faculty development, helping the school establish a talent cultivation system closely aligned with regional industrial development and responsive to technological advancements. It aims to position the 3D printing program as a model for serving the upgrading of manufacturing in the Pearl River Delta region, achieving precise alignment between educational supply and industrial demand
