South China Normal University - Survey on the Well-being Status of Guangzhou Residents

Company overview
South China Normal University is a nationally prioritized institution under the "211 Project," with strengths and advantages in educational sciences and psychology, particularly in psychology, which is among the leading disciplines in China. With the support of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee for Propaganda, the university's psychology department has jointly established the "Fengfu Guangzhou Psychological Service and Counseling Base," dedicated to long-term monitoring and research on the well-being status of Guangzhou residents, and promoting the scientific and data-driven development of psychological public welfare initiatives within urban governance.
Research background
In the context of rapid socioeconomic development, residents' pursuit of a fulfilling life has become increasingly diverse and refined. To systematically understand the relationship between residents' life satisfaction, psychological states, and the effectiveness of urban governance, the Municipal Committee for Propaganda has jointly initiated a survey with South China Normal University on the well-being status of Guangzhou residents. The study aims to track changes in the city's well-being index over time and provide decision-making support for government policies in urban development, public services, and social governance. In 2017, the survey entered its second phase, further deepening the dynamic measurement of various well-being indicators.
Research scope
In April 2017, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by South China Normal University to conduct data collection and analysis for the 2017 annual survey on the well-being status of Guangzhou residents. The survey focused on seven primary indicators: personal development, quality of life, spiritual life, social environment, social equity, government services, and ecological environment. Using a 5-point rating scale, a weighted composite index model was constructed. CEIDEA's research team conducted questionnaires across 11 districts of Guangzhou, combining random sampling with targeted interviews, ultimately collecting 2,000 valid responses representing diverse age groups, occupations, and residential types to ensure sample representativeness. Subsequently, the research team performed data cleaning, normalization, weighted calculations, and multidimensional analysis to identify core factors and key weaknesses influencing residents' well-being.
Expected outcomes
The findings of this survey will serve as the core dataset for the "2017 Annual Report on the Well-being Status of Guangzhou Residents," systematically presenting the well-being index levels across dimensions such as personal development, public services, and ecological construction, as well as inter-district disparities. The research outcomes will provide quantitative reference for the Municipal Committee and Government in formulating city development strategies centered on public welfare, and will also offer actionable policy recommendations and psychological service pathways for the construction of a 'Happy Guangzhou,' promoting a transition in urban governance from an efficiency-oriented to a well-being-oriented model.
