Research background
With the rapid growth of motor vehicle ownership, Beijing faces serious challenges related to traffic congestion and environmental pollution. New energy electric vehicles (NEVs), due to their low-carbon and environmentally friendly characteristics, are widely seen as a key solution for alleviating urban transportation and environmental pressures. However, there remains a need for a deeper understanding and quantitative analysis of consumer acceptance, willingness to adopt, purchasing behaviors, and functional preferences regarding NEVs. To support the development of relevant behavioral models and policy simulations, the Department of Geography and Resource Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong plans to conduct on-the-ground field research in Beijing's six administrative districts—Haidian, Chaoyang, Dongcheng, Xicheng, Shijingshan, and Fengtai—collecting primary data to support academic research.
Research scope
In April 2017, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the Department of Geography and Resource Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong to conduct in-person questionnaire intercept surveys across the six administrative districts of Beijing. A total of 500 valid samples were successfully collected. Through a structured questionnaire, the study systematically gathered key information on Beijing residents' current vehicle ownership, commuting habits, awareness of and willingness to adopt new energy electric vehicles, brand preferences, functional requirements, price sensitivity, and purchase intentions. This research aims to identify the potential and barriers to NEV adoption, providing foundational data for subsequent modeling of consumer behavior and policy impact analysis.
Expected outcomes
The findings from this study will serve as foundational data for the Department of Geography and Resource Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in its research on new energy transportation. The results will be used to develop behavioral response models and policy adaptability analyses for Beijing residents during the transition to greener transportation. Beyond academic publications and research advancement in the field of sustainable urban transportation, the findings will also provide authentic and detailed data support for government agencies, new energy vehicle manufacturers, and transportation researchers, promoting the scientific and precise formulation and implementation of new energy vehicle policies.
