Tsinghua University - Research on Public Awareness of Green Buildings in Beijing

Company overview
Tsinghua University was founded in 1911, originally known as the Qinghua Academy. It was renamed Qinghua School in 1912 and officially designated as National Tsinghua University in 1928. Since 1949, it has been under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of the Central People's Government and has become one of the key institutions for national development. Following the nationwide reorganization of higher education institutions in 1952, Tsinghua University focused on engineering and technical talent development and is widely recognized as the 'cradle of red engineers.' Since the reform and opening-up, the university has continuously deepened reforms and implemented the '211 Initiative,' '985 Initiative,' and 'Double First-Class University' strategy, gradually evolving into a comprehensive research university covering 11 academic disciplines, with 20 schools and 58 departments. It has achieved remarkable accomplishments in talent cultivation, technological innovation, and international cooperation, ranking among the world's leading universities.
Research background
Under the national drive to promote green buildings and sustainable development strategies, the concept of green buildings has gradually gained traction in urban planning, real estate development, and daily life among residents. As the capital of China, Beijing serves as a representative case for understanding public awareness, acceptance, and purchasing intentions toward green buildings, which are highly indicative of policy implementation and industry development. Tsinghua University has conducted academic research on the current level of public awareness of green buildings among urban residents, aiming to systematically investigate public attitudes and understandings toward green buildings. This study provides a solid empirical foundation for promoting the popularization of green buildings in first-tier cities.
Research scope
In December 2017, Tsinghua University commissioned CEIDEA Research to conduct a specialized survey on public awareness of green buildings in the Beijing region. Through a quantitative questionnaire, 1,000 Beijing residents with prior home-buying experience were sampled, representing diverse geographic areas, age groups, and gender demographics. The survey explored residents' demographic information (such as age, education level, income, and occupation), their level of understanding of green buildings, sources of information exposure, primary perceived advantages, concerns, willingness to pay, and preferences in purchasing behavior. The findings provide a comprehensive analysis of public attitudes and behavioral tendencies toward green building products. The collected data has been rigorously processed and statistically analyzed, forming the empirical foundation for subsequent academic report development.
Expected outcomes
The research findings will provide Tsinghua University's green building awareness project with detailed first-hand data, reflecting the level of public knowledge, emotional acceptance, and actual consumption intentions regarding green buildings in Beijing. The results will offer policy recommendations for government optimization of related policies, and also provide theoretical support for green building enterprises in formulating product strategies and market promotion approaches. Ultimately, the research outcomes will further promote the adoption and popularization of green building concepts among urban residents, contributing to the realization of sustainable urban development goals.
