Company overview

Dongbei University was founded in 1923 and is a nationally key university directly administered by the Ministry of Education. It is one of the early institutions designated under the '211 Project' and '985 Project', and is currently a 'Double First-Class' construction university. With a long history and strong faculty, the university offers a comprehensive academic system spanning engineering, humanities, management, and economics. For decades, it has cultivated a large number of high-level talents for the nation. General Zhang Xueliang, a renowned patriotic leader, served as the university's president, instilling a deep sense of patriotism and social responsibility. Dongbei University has achieved significant accomplishments in technological innovation and talent development, particularly in engineering fields.

Research background

With the advancement of the national strategy of 'mass entrepreneurship and innovation for all', student entrepreneurship in higher education has become a key component of educational reform and employment structure adjustment. To gain a comprehensive understanding of current student entrepreneurship trends, motivations, and development challenges, Dongbei University commissioned CEIDEA Research to conduct empirical data collection on both current and graduate students. This study aims to provide actionable insights for curriculum development, the enhancement of entrepreneurial support systems, and policy optimization, while also supporting academic research and policy recommendations.

Research scope

In November 2017, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Dongbei University to conduct a quantitative survey on student entrepreneurship. The survey targeted both current and graduate students from the university, collecting 200 valid samples through a structured questionnaire. Key dimensions included whether students had entrepreneurial experience, the timing of startup, initial funding sources, sector selection, motivations and challenges, project outcomes, and perceived institutional support for entrepreneurship—providing a holistic view of student entrepreneurial behavior and attitudes across different stages.

Expected outcomes

This study will provide Dongbei University with authentic, data-driven insights into the current state of student entrepreneurship, identify key characteristics of potential entrepreneurs, and uncover common challenges they face. The findings will serve as a critical reference for improving entrepreneurial guidance services, enhancing student entrepreneurial awareness, and strengthening the overall entrepreneurial ecosystem. Additionally, the research results will form a solid data foundation for future reports on student entrepreneurship and for advancing university-level innovation and entrepreneurship education reforms.
