Company overview

Xiamen Oceanic Vocational and Technical College, under the administration of the Fujian Provincial Department of Education, is a public higher vocational institution located in Fujian Province. Its predecessor was the Oceanic Science and Technology Department established in 1920 by the renowned patriotic overseas Chinese Chen Jia-geng, one of the earliest institutions in China to train technical personnel in aquaculture. The college currently operates two campuses—Siming and Xiang'an—with a total land area of 712 acres and a built-up area of 201,000 square meters. It features seven teaching departments: Nautical Technology, Information Technology, Business Administration, Biotechnology, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Basic Education Department, and Ideological and Political Education Department, offering programs in areas such as marine engineering, aquaculture, and mechanical-electrical integration, covering 33 majors. With over 8,000 full-time students, the college boasts a well-structured faculty, comprising nearly 500 full-time and part-time instructors, 27% of whom hold senior professional titles, and 74% of full-time instructors classified as 'dual-certified' (both industry and academic expertise). The institution maintains 149 on-campus training labs and 169 off-campus internship bases, establishing a robust industry-education integration system.

Research background

In accordance with the Fujian Provincial Department of Education's requirements for developing guidance-level talent cultivation plans for vocational and higher vocational education, Xiamen Oceanic Vocational and Technical College intends to refine the talent development pathway and teaching system for the precision mold manufacturing program. Given the rapid changes in actual enterprise demands and job-specific skill requirements, the college urgently needs to conduct research to understand industry development trends and the specific skill requirements of enterprises for such talent, ensuring that the training objectives closely align with actual job demands. This will provide strong support for subsequent course design, skill training, and collaboration between schools and enterprises.

Research scope

In December 2017, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Xiamen Oceanic Vocational and Technical College to conduct a specialized investigation into the talent demand for the precision mold manufacturing program. Through in-depth one-on-one interviews with 30 representative enterprises in the precision mold manufacturing sector, the study collected key information on enterprise operations, core job positions, evolving skill requirements, hiring standards, and talent development pathways. The research also explored enterprises' specific opinions and recommendations regarding school-enterprise cooperation, internship and training arrangements, and professional conduct expectations. The selected enterprises span various scales and technical directions to enhance the representativeness and breadth of the findings.

Expected outcomes

This research will provide the college with a comprehensive and authentic report on enterprise talent demand, fully reflecting the current skill structure and future development trends in the precision mold manufacturing industry. The findings will directly inform the design of the middle-to-higher vocational talent cultivation plan for the precision mold manufacturing program, optimize curriculum development, practical teaching, and talent evaluation mechanisms, and promote the better alignment of professional education with regional industrial development and actual enterprise hiring needs. The study will contribute a practical model for high-skilled manufacturing talent development in Fujian Province.
