Research background
The Shanghai Disneyland Resort opened in 2016, becoming the first Disneyland theme park in mainland China. It has quickly emerged as a key driver in promoting Shanghai's tourism industry. The project not only directly boosted visitor numbers but also significantly impacted the city's visibility, changes in tourism structures, and the vitality of surrounding economies. To scientifically evaluate its operational effects, particularly its influence on urban spatial patterns and tourism behavior, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University plans to conduct on-site field research, collecting authentic data to support relevant research projects.
Research scope
In February 2019, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University to conduct on-site sampling investigations among visitors to the Shanghai Disneyland Resort. The study focused on visitors' travel routes, itinerary arrangements, duration of stay, consumption patterns, origin locations, and accommodation choices. The sample included diverse visitor groups such as families, couples, individual travelers, and tour groups from various cities, ensuring data diversity and representativeness. The research combined on-site intercept interviews and structured questionnaires to ensure the quality of questionnaire returns and the scientific validity of the findings, providing foundational data for subsequent studies on spatial layout, transportation demand, and tourism spillover effects.
Expected outcomes
This research will provide the Tongji University research team with comprehensive and detailed data on visitor behavior and consumption patterns. It will enable the academic team to systematically analyze the impacts of Disneyland on Shanghai's tourism landscape, regional economic stimulation, brand visibility, and the city's geographic competitiveness. The research findings will support future theoretical studies on the effects of large-scale tourism projects on urban spatial development and regional interconnectivity mechanisms, offering forward-looking academic insights and practical references for urban tourism economic planning and policy formulation.
