Cruise Customer Satisfaction Study

Company overview

Yun Ding Hong Kong Limited is one of the leading global players in the leisure, entertainment, tourism, and hotel services industry, operating two major international brands: Star Cruises and Norway Cruise Line. As the third-largest cruise operator worldwide, the Yun Ding group manages a fleet of 20 cruise ships with itineraries spanning over 200 destinations, providing approximately 41,850 standard berths. The company is committed to delivering high-quality, diversified cruise vacation experiences for global travelers. In 2016, with the gradual commissioning of the Nansha Port Cruise Terminal, two of Yun Ding's cruise ships began operations in Guangzhou Nansha Port in January and September, respectively, further expanding its footprint in the southern China cruise market.

Research background

Faced with a rapidly growing Chinese cruise tourism market and the trend of consumer upgrading, how to enhance service experiences while steadily expanding the customer base has become a core strategic issue for Yun Ding Hong Kong's operations in China. Particularly during the early stages of new cruise operations, scientific and systematic customer satisfaction research is essential to gain deep insights into actual traveler feedback across key service areas—such as leisure and entertainment, dining, accommodations, theater performances, shopping, and shore excursions—promptly identifying service weaknesses and driving process optimization and experience improvements to strengthen brand competitiveness and customer loyalty.

Research scope

In April 2016, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Yun Ding Hong Kong Limited to launch a one-year dedicated customer satisfaction research project, commencing on November 1 of the same year. The study employed a combination of telephone follow-ups and one-on-one questionnaire interviews onboard cruise ships, collecting 2,084 valid samples per month, totaling 25,000 samples over the year. The research participants were actual passengers aboard newly operated cruise vessels. The scope covered all core service elements, including restaurant services, leisure and entertainment activities, theater performances, route design, shore excursions, shopping experiences, accommodation facilities, cleanliness and hygiene, casino services, and staff service attitudes. The questionnaire included a satisfaction rating scale and an open-ended suggestion module, systematically evaluating overall customer satisfaction levels and specific improvement recommendations.

Expected outcomes

Through this study, Yun Ding Hong Kong will establish a systematic, quantifiable customer satisfaction indicator framework, comprehensively identifying key service touchpoints and potential pain points that travelers prioritize during cruise operations. The research findings will provide precise guidance for service improvements, staff training, process redesign, and product upgrades. Additionally, a service quality database will be established, enabling cross-sectional (across different voyages and cruise ships) and longitudinal (across different time periods) comparisons, supporting the company in building a continuous improvement mechanism to enhance overall passenger satisfaction and brand reputation, thereby reinforcing its leadership position in the Chinese cruise market.
