McIntosh Audio - Monitoring Investigation of Unauthorized Sales by Distributors

Company overview
McIntosh was founded in 1949 by Frank H. McIntosh and Golden J. Gow in New York State, USA. It is one of the leading brands in the global high-end audio industry. As the first manufacturer to integrate a pre-amplifier and power amplifier into a single Hi-End audio device, McIntosh has consistently adhered to the design philosophy of 'high fidelity, stability, and reliability.' Its products are highly favored by audiophiles and professionals worldwide and are regarded as a classic symbol in the high-end audio field. Guangzhou Shenghe Equipment Co., Ltd. is the official exclusive distributor for McIntosh in China, responsible for product distribution and market control operations.
Research background
As McIntosh's brand continues to expand within China's premium audio market, its distribution network has grown significantly. However, this expansion has also brought forth increasingly serious challenges in price management. Some regional distributors have engaged in unauthorized low-price sales and cross-region product smuggling, which not only disrupt market order but also severely damage brand image and consumer trust. To effectively address these issues, Shenghe Company plans to establish a routine monitoring mechanism, conducting nationwide assessments of pricing and behavioral compliance through a third-party professional research institution.
Research scope
In August 2017, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Guangzhou Shenghe Equipment Co., Ltd. to initiate a full-year mystery shopper monitoring project targeting the Chinese regional distribution network of McIntosh Audio. The project covered 27 key distribution outlets nationwide, with 20 stores selected monthly for on-site monitoring. Research methods included: in-store mystery shopper visits (on-site experience, price inquiries, observation of sales processes), telephone consultations (inquiries about product pricing and supply channels), and online platform monitoring (e-commerce listings, forum content collection), with key monitoring areas focusing on retail price compliance, cross-regional sales, and unauthorized promotional activities.
Expected outcomes
The final research report will establish a price monitoring database through long-term tracking, conducting quantitative analysis and trend forecasting for improper behaviors such as price inversion and product smuggling, providing Shenghe Company with early warning and corrective action insights. The research findings will help McIntosh establish a robust pricing management system and distributor control framework in the Chinese market, strengthen brand consistency, enhance channel operational discipline, and lay a solid institutional and data foundation for the brand's sustainable development in the premium audio market in China.
