COH (City of Hope) was founded in 1913 and is one of the National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers, a globally leading research and treatment institution in the fields of cancer, diabetes, and other major diseases. Hazen Group, a key investor in the healthcare sector, is collaborating with COH to establish a premium hematologic cancer specialty hospital in China, aiming to introduce internationally advanced treatment systems and enhance local capabilities in the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases.
Research background
In recent years, the incidence of cancer in Shenzhen has continued to rise, particularly among hematological malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, with a significant increase in patient numbers. There remains a gap in the public healthcare system's capacity to provide high-end treatment for these blood cancers. To properly position the proposed hematologic cancer specialty hospital, COH and Hazen Group seek to fully understand the current medical practices, patient preferences, service demands, and operational models of existing cancer hospitals in the Shenzhen region, providing comprehensive data support for hospital development and service system planning.
Research scope
In September 2016, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by COH to conduct a market study on the hematologic cancer sector in the Shenzhen region. The study employed in-depth qualitative interviews with cancer patients and their families, collecting insights on pain points during treatment, satisfaction with current services, and expectations for a new type of hospital; it also included interviews with frontline oncology experts and hospital administrators to obtain professional medical opinions, current treatment resource composition, and patient flow patterns; and a comparative analysis of service systems, staffing structures, operational status, and marketing and communication strategies across major cancer hospitals in the Shenzhen area.
Expected outcomes
The final report will provide systematic data and decision-making recommendations for COH and Hazen Group on establishing a premium hematologic cancer specialty hospital in Shenzhen, drawing on multiple perspectives including patient needs, healthcare behaviors, satisfaction feedback, expert recommendations, and current hospital operations. The report aims to help the partners accurately position their hospital in a competitive healthcare market, define differentiated service pathways, and achieve a balanced integration of social and economic benefits.
