User Research for an Export Inspection Platform

Company overview

Hebei Zengwu International Trade Co., Ltd. is a comprehensive foreign trade enterprise specializing in international trade operations, committed to providing global buyers with high-quality Chinese-made products and end-to-end trade solutions. The company's business scope includes import and export trading, supply chain management, customized product development, and international logistics services. As e-commerce and global supply chain models continue to evolve, Hebei Zengwu is actively exploring service innovations beyond traditional trade operations, driving digitalization and standardization of foreign trade processes. The company aims to build a modern, transparent trade platform

Research background

Export inspection serves as a critical quality assurance step in international trade. In practice, it faces multiple challenges, including cumbersome procedures, high costs, information asymmetry, and regulatory gaps. Particularly during cross-border buyer-seller collaborations, traditional inspection methods struggle to efficiently and cost-effectively meet the demand for precise, on-demand verification. To meet the market's growing need for more efficient and transparent inspection solutions, Hebei Zengwu International Trade Co., Ltd. plans to develop a digital export inspection platform integrating third-party inspections, online coordination, and information management. Prior to platform design, the company intends to conduct user research to systematically identify the inspection needs and pain points of target users, evaluating the market viability of the platform.

Research scope

In October 2015, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Hebei Zengwu International Trade Co., Ltd. to investigate the current supply and demand dynamics in export inspection services, conducting a targeted survey of international buyers attending the Canton Fair and domestic export suppliers. The study employed a combination of on-site interviews and in-depth interviews to comprehensively understand buyers' concerns regarding inspection standards, service processes, inspection frequency, willingness to pay, and criteria for selecting inspection agencies. It also collected domestic suppliers' challenges encountered during inspection cooperation and their recommendations for improvement. Special attention was given to buyers' and suppliers' attitudes toward online inspection platforms, their functional requirements, and anticipated usage behaviors, providing actionable insights for platform design.

Expected outcomes

Through this research, Hebei Zengwu International Trade Co., Ltd. will gain a systematic understanding of the actual needs and key pain points of international buyers and domestic exporters during the export inspection process, validating the market acceptance and potential for growth of an 'export inspection platform.' The findings will provide data support for the modular design of the platform, the construction of service workflows, and the configuration of user-facing features, enabling the platform to achieve efficient matching, transparent processes, and cost-controlled inspection services. In the future, the platform will serve as an industry infrastructure connecting buyers, suppliers, third-party inspection agencies, and independent inspectors, helping to establish a more standardized and sustainable export inspection ecosystem.
