SK Telecom Korea - Feasibility Study for Market Entry into the Chongqing Healthcare Sector

Company overview
SK Telecom Korea, established in 1984, is one of the core subsidiaries of the SK Group, headquartered in Seoul. As one of Korea's largest and most influential mobile communication operators, SK Telecom has consistently ranked at the top of the Korean telecommunications market share. The company holds leading technological expertise in 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and has made substantial forward-looking investments in healthcare informatization, telemedicine, and health big data. It has successfully developed multiple intelligent healthcare solutions, possessing end-to-end capabilities from technology to application.
Research background
The Chinese healthcare market has consistently demonstrated strong growth potential, particularly in emerging healthcare models such as premium healthcare, community-based medical services, and remote diagnosis—all of which have received strong policy support from the government. SK Telecom intends to introduce its mature intelligent healthcare solutions into the Chinese market, selecting the Chongqing Jialing New Area as a pilot region. The company aims to establish an integrated healthcare network comprising 'premium clinics + community service points + corporate medical rooms' to explore the feasibility and commercial viability of its operations in China. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment of the local policy environment, healthcare demand, competitive landscape, and potential partnership resources is required prior to market entry.
Research scope
In June 2016, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the SK Telecom Global Healthcare Business Team to conduct a comprehensive study of the Chongqing Jialing New Area, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The study included an analysis of macro-level healthcare policies, regional medical resource allocation, the structure and development trends of the private healthcare market, and in-depth research on the health needs, consumption preferences, and payment capacity of target groups—including middle-class families, foreign enterprise employees, and corporate healthcare executives. Additionally, interviews were conducted with policymakers, private clinic managers, and healthcare investors in the Jialing New Area to evaluate the policy support, commercial appeal, and implementation challenges associated with SK Telecom's proposed ICT-integrated service model—offering premium/international clinics, community medical points, and corporate health management services.
Expected outcomes
This study is expected to provide SK Telecom with systematic, professional data and decision-making support for developing a commercial healthcare model in Chongqing and across China. The report will comprehensively analyze project feasibility from dimensions such as market demand hierarchy, business model alignment, competitive landscape controllability, user acceptance, and policy support. It will clearly define the core value of ICT technology in bridging premium and grassroots healthcare resources, and propose actionable implementation pathways, operational models, and risk mitigation strategies—laying a strategic foundation for SK Telecom's expansion into China's smart healthcare sector.
