Feasibility Study on the Entry of LNG Market for Guangzhou Public Bus Station Management

Company overview

Guangzhou City Transportation Station and Terminal Construction Management Center is a public institution directly under the Guangzhou Municipal Transportation Commission, responsible for the key duties of constructing and managing urban public bus infrastructure. Based on the overall planning of public bus station and terminal facilities, the center conducts planning, construction, and daily operational management of stations and waiting shelters. It also manages the funding for station construction, collects and organizes transportation data from road transport terminals and operational data from public bus stations, providing data support and decision-making basis for government departments in formulating transportation development policies and optimizing public bus services…

Research background

Under the strong impetus of national energy structure adjustment and policies promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) as a clean energy source has seen increasingly widespread application in the transportation sector. As a frontline of urban energy transition, the public transportation system's energy usage directly impacts urban environmental quality and operational cost control. To explore the feasibility of introducing LNG as a new energy source for Guangzhou's public bus system, the Guangzhou City Transportation Station and Terminal Construction Management Center urgently requires a systematic analysis of the overall development trends, technological maturity, economic viability, and safety considerations of the LNG market, identifying both potential opportunities and challenges in its local implementation.

Research scope

In December 2013, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the Guangzhou Public Bus Station Management Office to initiate the feasibility study on the entry of the LNG market. This study adopts a combined approach of macro-level analysis and expert consultations, focusing on four key areas: first, analyzing the current development status of the LNG market, including production capacity distribution, price trends, and representative urban application cases; second, evaluating the current deployment status and technological pathways of LNG-powered new energy vehicles in public transportation systems both domestically and internationally; third, assessing the primary risks associated with introducing an LNG project from dimensions such as project operations, cost structure, safety, and technical support; fourth, organizing specialized seminars with environmental and public transportation industry experts to compare the advantages and challenges of LNG-powered buses against existing energy models, and gathering diverse perspectives to enrich the research scope.

Expected outcomes

This study will provide the Guangzhou Public Bus Station Management Office with a comprehensive and professional feasibility analysis report on the entry of the LNG market, clearly outlining the policy environment, market opportunities, technological compatibility, and potential risks associated with selecting LNG as a public transportation energy source. Based on Guangzhou's existing station infrastructure and transportation operational characteristics, the report will propose actionable and practical implementation pathways. The research findings will serve as a key reference for Guangzhou's strategic decisions on new energy public transportation development, and contribute to advancing the city's green and sustainable transportation transition.
