Consumer Research on New Product Launch

Case Details

Company Overview Zippo is a premium metal lighter brand manufactured by the American Zippo Company. Since its founding in 1932, Zippo has built a broad user base worldwide, thanks to its superior windproof performance and durability. Recognized for its classic design, distinctive opening and closing sound, and replaceable components, the Zippo lighter has become a symbol of both practicality and collectible value. It uses stable petroleum-derived fuel, producing a safe and clean flame, widely used in outdoor settings, daily life, and as a collectible item.

Research background

To expand market presence and respond to the aesthetic and functional demands of a new generation of consumers, Zippo plans to launch four new product models. These new models feature innovative design concepts, material processes, and functional details, covering diverse styles including artistic, outdoor, and mechanical. Prior to full-scale production, the company urgently requires a comprehensive market research initiative to understand target consumers' preferences for lighter design, key considerations, and potential purchase intentions—enabling product optimization, improving market acceptance, and reducing launch risk.

Research scope

In June 2020, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Zippo to conduct a consumer demand study among users and collectors of lighters. The primary research participants included everyday users, collector enthusiasts, and design-savvy individuals. The study employed a mixed-methods approach combining in-depth interviews, focus groups, and structured questionnaires. Key areas of inquiry included user acceptance of new design concepts, preferences for visual elements, attention to functional features, emotional connections, and brand tone alignment. Through comprehensive analysis of respondent feedback, the study assessed the appeal and market potential of each model in the eyes of consumers.

Expected outcomes

This research is expected to help Zippo clearly identify the core needs of different consumer segments regarding lighter appearance, functional features, and brand value. The findings will support product refinement and enhance user experience. The research results will provide data-driven support for finalizing prototype designs, and serve as strategic input for subsequent product positioning, marketing strategy development, and user communication approaches—ensuring higher market recognition and commercial success for the new product launch.
