Market Research on Pet and Pet Food in China

Company overview

The American Pet Food Institute (PFI) was established in 1958 and serves as the trade association representing 98% of pet food manufacturers in the United States. PFI is committed to advancing the pet food industry, advocating for the interests of its member companies, and providing consumers with reliable pet food standards and information. The association also participates in the development of policies and regulations related to pet food, with a focus on enhancing the safety and nutritional value of pet food.

Research background

With the continuous growth of the pet market in China, the American Pet Food Institute (PFI) seeks to further understand the development trends, consumer demands, and brand awareness in the Chinese pet and pet food (cat and dog) market, in order to provide strategic support for its future business development in China. Through this research, PFI will gain a clearer understanding of consumer behavior in the Chinese market and be able to refine its product promotion and market penetration strategies.

Research scope

In August 2020, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the PFI China Office to conduct a comprehensive market research project. The study integrated both macro-level and micro-level research approaches. At the macro level, the research analyzed the overall development trends of the Chinese pet (cat and dog) market, including pet population size, consumer purchasing power, consumption patterns, and the scale and growth potential of the pet food market. At the micro level, CEIDEA Research conducted in-depth interviews with pet e-commerce platforms, pet owners, pet retail stores, and veterinarians to gain a detailed understanding of consumers' brand awareness, current consumption behaviors, needs, and preferences for American pet food brands. The study also evaluated the performance of American brands in the Chinese market and analyzed the competitive landscape.

Expected outcomes

The final report of this research will provide the American Pet Food Institute (PFI) with detailed data on the Chinese market, helping the association understand the current state of the pet food market, consumer trends, and market demand. This will enable PFI to make informed, reliable decisions regarding product positioning, brand promotion, channel development, and strategic planning in China. The research findings will also support PFI in formulating more effective market expansion strategies, further promoting the growth of American pet food brands in China.
