Company overview

MecOil Group is a global multinational enterprise engaged in the R&D, manufacturing, and sales of premium lubricants and industrial chemicals, with products widely applied across automotive, industrial machinery, and energy sectors. In 2009, MecOil Group officially entered the Chinese market, establishing a lubricant business unit to comprehensively expand its presence in automotive after-sales service and industrial lubrication sectors in China. Facing strong international competitors such as Mobil and Shell, MecOil has adhered to a localization strategy of 'quality-driven and service-innovated' approaches, leveraging precise market positioning and channel development to gradually build a differentiated brand presence, aiming to stand out in the fiercely competitive lubricant market.

Research background

With the continuous rise in China's vehicle ownership and a maturing lubricant market, brand competition has intensified. Since entering the Chinese market, MecOil Lubricants faces the challenge of consolidating its existing market share, enhancing brand awareness, and effectively capturing market share from competitors. As a typical low-visibility but high-specialization consumer product, lubricant purchasing decisions often rely on recommendations from sales outlets and consumers' perceptions of brand performance. To understand actual consumer behavior patterns and the impact of terminal sales mechanisms on purchasing decisions, MecOil Lubricants seeks to gain actionable strategic insights through a systematic research effort, to guide refinements in brand positioning, market expansion, and terminal strategy.

Research scope

In August 2012, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by MecOil Lubricants to conduct a consumer behavior study on lubricant decision-making in the Guangdong, Zhuhai, and Jiangmen regions. The study targeted three core user groups: private vehicle owners, commercial vehicle fleet procurement managers, and sales terminal staff. Key research areas included: private vehicle owners' attention to product performance characteristics (such as viscosity, anti-wear properties, and brand), information sources, brand awareness, and oil change frequency; fleet procurement managers' price sensitivity, brand trust, and their relationship with distributors; and sales terminal staff's sales pitch language, performance evaluation mechanisms, promotional responsiveness, and level of knowledge about the MecOil brand. Research methods included questionnaire surveys, qualitative interviews, and on-site terminal observations, aiming to comprehensively map the behavioral pathways across the lubricant consumption chain.

Expected outcomes

This study is expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the consumption patterns and competitive landscape of lubricants in the Guangdong region, deeply explore the complete decision-making process from consumer awareness to purchase, identify the critical role of terminal sales personnel in influencing user choices, and pinpoint key barriers hindering MecOil's brand promotion and conversion. The final report will provide empirical support for optimizing MecOil's brand positioning strategy, refining terminal sales training, designing product portfolios, and developing marketing promotion strategies in the Chinese market, thereby enhancing brand competitiveness and accelerating market share growth in China.
