Research background
Dyson, a globally leading small appliance brand, is renowned for its technological innovation and premium positioning, enjoying high brand awareness and reputation in products such as vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, and air purifiers. Recently, a large number of products labeled with 'Dyson' and/or 'dyson'—such as mosquito repellent lamps—have appeared on e-commerce platforms like Taobao and in offline retail channels. These products are not manufactured by Dyson and are suspected of infringing on the brand. They are likely to cause confusion and misidentification among ordinary consumers, thereby damaging the legitimate rights and interests of Dyson. Gao Lin Rui Ge Law Firm requires market research to gather relevant evidence to support its legal claims regarding brand protection in the Chinese market.
Research scope
In May 2017, Ceide Research was commissioned by the Guangzhou Office of Gao Lin Rui Ge Law Firm to conduct a targeted survey on small appliance brand awareness in three major Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. The study employed a combination of questionnaire surveys and on-the-spot interviews with target consumers, focusing on understanding consumers' level of awareness of the 'Dyson' brand, their brand impressions, product associations, and purchasing experiences. Scenario-based simulation tests were also conducted to assess whether consumers would be likely to confuse or misidentify non-original products bearing the 'dyson' mark. Additionally, the study collected data on consumer sensitivity to various brand elements, including naming, design, and functional descriptions, to support an evaluation of brand recognition and differentiation.
Expected outcomes
This research will produce a comprehensive analysis report covering three major cities with representative samples, systematically reflecting the breadth and depth of consumer awareness toward the 'Dyson' brand, as well as evaluating the potential for consumer misperception caused by the use of the 'dyson' mark. The findings will provide legally actionable data to support Gao Lin Rui Ge Law Firm's efforts in enforcing trademark and anti-counterfeiting actions in the Chinese market, helping to protect the Dyson brand's legitimate rights and market value in China.
