Research background
As the core area of Shenzhen's development of a 'world-class coastal ecological tourism zone', Dapeng New Area is currently constructing a high-standard, high-quality greenway system, which has already achieved a certain scale. However, the existing public bicycle rental system struggles to meet the demand for traffic relief and distinctive non-motorized tourism experiences during peak tourist seasons. With the rise of shared bicycles, traditional public bicycle systems face operational challenges and opportunities for transformation and upgrading. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive study to understand public demand and industry trends, providing strategic guidance for the development of the public bicycle system in the new area.
Research scope
In February 2017, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by New City Planning and Architectural Design Co., Ltd. to conduct field research across six districts of Shenzhen: Nanshan, Bao'an, Futian, Luohu, Longgang, and Yantian. The study included in-depth interviews with the public regarding their usage behaviors and preferences, satisfaction with existing public bicycle systems, attitudes and expectations toward shared bicycles, as well as comprehensive interviews with industry experts. The research analyzed existing operational and service issues within the greenway system in Dapeng New Area. Through data analysis and user profiling, the study identified key directions for optimizing public bicycle operations.
Expected outcomes
This research aims to support the formulation of a slow-traffic strategy in Dapeng New Area that aligns with the development direction of ecological tourism, and to propose practical recommendations for a new operational model of public bicycle systems. The report will focus on key issues such as integrating public transportation with tourism experiences, promoting low-carbon, green travel, and building intelligent management systems. It will provide detailed data and strategic support for the new area to enhance its non-motorized transportation network, improve visitor travel experiences and traffic efficiency, and establish distinctive coastal tourism projects.
