Ji Shi Pharmaceutical - Market Research on CRO Pricing for Clinical Development

Company overview
Ji Shi Pharmaceutical is a biopharmaceutical company focused on innovative cancer treatments, dedicated to developing and commercializing immunotherapy and precision medicine drugs with global potential. Through its "clinical-first" strategy, the company rapidly advances clinical trials for its pipeline products and actively addresses the urgent needs of Chinese and global cancer patients for novel treatment options. Ji Shi Pharmaceutical has extensive experience in clinical development, international collaboration, product access, and commercialization, positioning itself as one of the fastest-growing and most comprehensively diversified innovative biopharmaceutical companies in China.
Research background
With continuous optimization of national policies regarding new drug approval processes, Chinese biopharmaceutical enterprises are entering a new phase of rapid development. Ji Shi Pharmaceutical's "clinical development-first" model enables it to simultaneously advance multiple clinical trials across various indications and target areas, resulting in year-on-year increases in its clinical procurement expenditures. To ensure the rationality and market competitiveness of its R&D spending, the company urgently requires a systematic understanding of the current CRO market pricing structure—particularly the market prices associated with different indications, trial phases, and trial types—enabling it to evaluate the pricing rationality of its current CRO partners and provide data support for future negotiation and partnership optimization.
Research scope
In February 2020, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Ji Shi Pharmaceutical to conduct a specialized study on the procurement pricing of clinical CRO services among domestic biopharmaceutical enterprises. This project employed a targeted in-depth interview approach, selecting representative biopharmaceutical companies and R&D-focused firms that have already initiated Phase I–III clinical trials as interviewees. Through semi-structured interviews, we collected detailed pricing data—including individual and bundled quotes—for CRO services at various stages of clinical trials (e.g., site selection, trial protocol design, patient recruitment, trial execution, data management, statistical analysis, and medical writing). By cross-comparing these prices against key variables such as project scale, indication type, and number of enrolled patients, a standardized pricing evaluation model was developed.
Expected outcomes
This study systematically mapped the prevailing pricing ranges for CRO services in the domestic biopharmaceutical industry, identified the primary factors driving price variations across different development stages, and conducted a cross-organizational benchmark analysis of Ji Shi Pharmaceutical's current clinical service procurement pricing. The report clearly identified instances of excessive pricing in certain CRO partnership projects and recommended an optimal negotiation strategy that balances cost control with project quality. The findings provide Ji Shi Pharmaceutical with robust data and negotiation leverage for future discussions with CRO providers, as well as support for optimizing partnership models and supplier evaluation, ultimately enhancing the efficiency of overall R&D investment utilization.
