Financial Needs Survey of Merchants in Specialized Markets

Company overview

Guangzhou Meibo City, developed and invested by Guangdong Anhua Meibo Real Estate Group, is a well-known large-scale specialized beauty and cosmetics trading market located in the bustling Guangyuan West Road business district of Guangzhou. The Meibo City integrates services such as hairdressing, beauty and skincare, fragrance raw materials, intimate apparel, professional training, and beauty therapy equipment. It currently hosts over 1,700 merchants, with its sales network extending nationwide and into Southeast Asia, Africa, and beyond, serving as a key hub for the regional beauty and cosmetics industry. The merchants maintain high levels of daily transaction activity and frequent capital turnover, demonstrating strong market vitality and significant demand for financial services.

Research background

As the overall transaction volume within Meibo City continues to expand, merchants' dependence on financial services has increased significantly, particularly in areas such as daily operations, raw material procurement, and accounts receivable/payable management, where strong demands for liquidity exist. The Baiyun Branch of the Rural Commercial Bank aims to design practical financial products tailored to the actual needs of Meibo City merchants to meet their working capital requirements and strengthen both the bank's deposit acquisition capabilities and customer retention. To achieve this, a comprehensive understanding of the merchants' operational conditions and preferences for financial products is required, identifying pain points and service gaps in current banking offerings, providing actionable insights for product development.

Research scope

In August 2013, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the Baiyun Branch of the Rural Commercial Bank to conduct a sample survey of merchants within Guangzhou Meibo City. The study systematically investigated merchant business models, revenue scales, capital turnover cycles, lending intentions, preferred payment channels, and bookkeeping practices. It focused particularly on the actual needs for short-term working capital loans, accounts receivable financing, supply chain finance, POS settlement, and mobile payment tools. Through in-depth interviews with a select group of merchants, the study indirectly assessed the current product portfolios and service quality of their primary banking partners, providing the Rural Commercial Bank with valuable competitive intelligence.

Expected outcomes

The final research report will present a clear and detailed profile of the financial needs of Meibo City merchants, clarifying their interest levels and usage barriers across various financial products. Based on merchant feedback, the report will recommend differentiated innovations in product design for the Rural Commercial Bank. The research findings will enable the Baiyun Branch to launch more attractive settlement and credit products, effectively guiding merchants to consolidate their capital flows within the Rural Commercial Bank system. This will enhance the bank's brand presence and market share in the specialized market sector, improve its deposit acquisition capabilities, and elevate its overall level of integrated financial services.
