Research background
With the accelerated pace of urbanization in Guangdong Province, the migrant population in cities such as Guangzhou, Zhongshan, and Dongguan has continued to grow. This large and rapidly expanding group has placed higher demands on housing security, living conditions, and social integration. However, the rapid concentration of population has also led to pressing issues such as housing shortages, uneven resource distribution, and increased pressure on public services. To provide scientific support for government housing and urban development policies, Guangdong Provincial Planning Institute has commissioned this research initiative.
Research scope
In March 2015, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by Guangdong Provincial Planning Institute to conduct in-depth interviews and questionnaires targeting the migrant population in Guangzhou, Zhongshan, and Dongguan. The study focused on key dimensions including type of housing, rental expenditure, intentions to purchase property, housing preferences, housing stability, family structure, desire for household registration, and access to public services. The research assessed the basic living conditions and long-term housing needs of migrant populations. Additionally, it analyzed differences between migrant and local populations in access to public resources and urban integration, providing factual basis for future resource allocation decisions.
Expected outcomes
Through this research, the government will gain a clear understanding of the housing structure and core needs of migrant populations in key areas. By integrating current land and resource supply conditions, the findings will provide decision support for the construction of housing security systems, optimization of housing supply models, planning of slum redevelopment projects, and adjustments to public housing allocation policies. Ultimately, this will enhance the fairness and coverage of public services, promote rational population distribution and stable urban development, and advance the creation of livable urban environments.
