Household Situation Survey of Pulmonary Disease Patients

Company overview

The Yunnan Center for Disease Control and Prevention (hereinafter referred to as "Yunnan CDC") was established in 2001 through the consolidation of the former Yunnan Provincial Sanitation and Epidemiological Prevention Station, the Yunnan Provincial Occupational Disease Prevention and Control Institute, the Yunnan Provincial Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Institute, and the Yunnan Provincial Dermatological Disease Prevention and Control Institute. It is the authoritative institution responsible for disease prevention, public health technical management, and service delivery in Yunnan Province. The Center bears key responsibilities for the control of major infectious diseases, chronic disease prevention, occupational disease prevention, and response to public health emergencies, serving as a critical technical support unit for public health decision-making across the province.

Research background

According to the 2012 China Cancer Registration Report, the incidence rate of lung cancer in Yunnan Province is 2 to 3 times the national average. In Xuanwei, the lung cancer incidence rate reaches 93 per 100,000, ranking first nationally, highlighting serious occupational and environmental health issues in the region. In particular, pneumoconiosis, as a classic occupational disease, poses a serious threat to the lives and quality of life of workers in mining and industrial enterprises. The Yunnan CDC aims to conduct a systematic investigation to understand the living conditions, medical treatment access, and social security status of pneumoconiosis patients, providing scientific evidence to support the development of more effective intervention, assistance, and prevention strategies.

Research scope

In October 2019, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the Yunnan CDC to conduct a special investigation into the household situations of pneumoconiosis patients in Xuanwei. The fieldwork employed door-to-door interviews, selecting 5 to 6 natural villages as sample areas, with a target coverage of approximately 2,000 households. Each household would be surveyed for 3 to 5 individuals, resulting in a total sample size of 5,000 individuals. The investigation covered basic information of pneumoconiosis patients (including name, employer, duration of exposure, and diagnosis status), health status, survival status, medical treatment history, social security, and civil relief measures. The research emphasized data authenticity and completeness, providing a solid data foundation for further analysis of disease etiology and policy effectiveness.

Expected outcomes

Through this large-scale door-to-door survey, the Yunnan CDC will comprehensively understand the current epidemiological situation, treatment access, and social protection coverage of pneumoconiosis patients in Xuanwei. The study will identify the primary social challenges and health risks faced by the pneumoconiosis population. The research findings will provide strong data support for local governments to formulate targeted occupational disease prevention policies, improve work-related injury recognition and treatment mechanisms, and enhance grassroots public health service capabilities. Additionally, this initiative will establish early warning mechanisms and intervention models for preventing new cases of pneumoconiosis, helping to reduce health threats at the source among high-risk groups and promoting the scientific and precise development of public health governance systems.
