Research background
Venezuela is located in northern South America and is one of the most resource-rich countries in Latin America. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Venezuela in 1974, bilateral ties have continuously strengthened. In recent years, the Chinese government has implemented a series of assistance initiatives in Venezuela through multilateral cooperation, including infrastructure development, medical support, and cooperation in the oil sector, significantly advancing practical cooperation between the two countries. As Chinese enterprises and capital gradually establish a presence in Venezuela, the image of China and public perception among the local population have become critical variables influencing future diplomatic strategies and investment risk assessments. Therefore, the Sinopec Research Institute of Economic and Technical Affairs commissioned a third-party research institution to conduct a systematic public opinion survey to accurately understand the Venezuelan public's genuine views on the Chinese government, economy, culture, and assistance initiatives.
Research scope
In May 2018, CEIDEA Research, under commission from the Sinopec Research Institute of Economic and Technical Affairs, conducted a systematic telephone questionnaire survey of 1,000 ordinary citizens across Venezuela using the CATI (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing) method. The survey was executed by a Spanish-speaking field team with local South American linguistic and cultural expertise. The survey covered respondents' overall attitudes, levels of trust, and recognition toward the Chinese government, culture, foreign policy, and corporate behavior; their awareness and evaluations of Chinese assistance projects (such as medical, housing, and energy support); their perceived impacts of Sino-Venezuelan cooperation on daily life; and their subjective judgments on Venezuela's current political and economic conditions.
Expected outcomes
This study will provide data support for the Chinese government and enterprises to fully understand the public perception of China's national image and cooperation intentions in Venezuela, objectively reflecting the reception and actual effectiveness of Chinese assistance and investment projects. Additionally, the report will reveal the public's potential preferences for future forms and sectors of assistance, offering reference for optimizing China's foreign aid strategies in Latin America, shaping its national image, and forecasting risks associated with large-scale overseas investments. This will promote deeper, mutually beneficial and people-to-people connected cooperation between China and Venezuela.
