Company overview

The Technology Development Promotion Center under the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development was established in July 1994. It is a direct research institution under the Ministry, primarily responsible for promoting technological transfer and application in the construction industry, building energy efficiency, and green building development. The Center has long been committed to policy research in building technology, project demonstration management, technical consulting, and training services, and serves as one of the key implementing bodies for the country's sustainable development strategies in the construction sector.

Research background

Traditional building heating methods in China have high energy dependence, especially in northern regions, where extensive use of coal and gas leads to significant emissions of exhaust gases, intensifying environmental pressures. Air-source heat pumps, as a new and energy-efficient technology, offer advantages in energy conservation and emission reduction and represent a key alternative solution for building heating and hot water systems. To assess the feasibility of promoting air-source heat pumps in urban buildings, the Technology Development Promotion Center under the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development launched a survey project targeting users in key cities.

Research scope

In April 2015, CEIDEA Research was commissioned by the Technology Development Promotion Center under the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development to conduct a survey among individual and corporate users—including hotels, schools, hospitals, office buildings, exhibition halls, and shopping malls—in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chongqing. Using a combination of CATI phone interviews, in-depth interviews, and on-site visits, the study comprehensively investigated users' current heating methods, usage costs, awareness and acceptance levels of air-source heat pump technology, potential installation intentions, and barriers to adoption, providing data support for the development of promotion strategies for air-source heat pumps.

Expected outcomes

This study aims to provide scientific basis for government policy formulation in building energy efficiency. The findings will systematically analyze the current status of heating and hot water systems across different user types, evaluate market awareness and acceptance of air-source heat pumps, identify bottlenecks and opportunities in market promotion, and offer the Technology Development Promotion Center with reliable research support for optimizing energy policies. Additionally, the study will provide direction for the promotion and application of energy-efficient green building products.
